Course summary

The Personal Track Safety (PTS) course is designed to equip railway workers with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely navigate and work on the railway infrastructure. The course is divided into key sessions that comprehensively cover the responsibilities, safety protocols, and emergency procedures necessary for working in high-risk environments. A critical emphasis is placed on adhering to Network Rail Lifesaving Rules, ensuring workers understand how their role aligns with maintaining the safety and operational integrity of the railway system.

Session 1 begins by introducing participants to the domestic arrangements and assessment requirements, setting expectations for the course and outlining the necessary criteria for achieving PTS certification. This session lays the foundation for the rest of the program by clarifying logistical details and assessment objectives.

Session 2 delves into the role of a PTS holder, focusing on individual responsibilities when walking or working on the infrastructure. This session emphasizes understanding the importance of safe actions and hazard identification. Participants also explore how incidents affect not just the worker but their families and colleagues, highlighting the broader impact of safety failures.

Session 3 addresses emergency situations, teaching participants how to effectively handle emergencies while adhering to safety-critical communication standards. This includes the proper methods for stopping a train, protecting the line, and making an emergency phone call. The concept of Lead Responsibility is introduced, helping participants understand their role in maintaining clear and effective communication to prevent and respond to incidents.

Session 4 the practical component of the course, involves a track visit where participants demonstrate the application of theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting. This includes wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), following Controller of Site Safety (COSS) instructions, identifying potential hazards, and practicing safe walking behaviours near the railway. By engaging in this hands-on assessment, participants solidify their understanding of safety protocols and hazard management.

Session 5 Finally, provides a formal knowledge assessment, ensuring participants have absorbed and can apply the course material. This comprehensive course ensures that by the end, workers not only understand their role in maintaining railway safety but are also equipped to act swiftly and correctly in emergency situations, ensuring the safety of both themselves and others on the track.
